The time is “NOW” for Janet T Planet. The Spring/Summer 2004 collection is inspired by the concept of Time and its measure. It takes its cue from Alan Lightman’s Einstein’s Dreams, in which he ‘paints with the notion of time’.

“NOW” explores three different perceptions of TIME. The first is quite literal, the second more scientific, and the third both poetic and philosophical. The three approaches reflect the functions of the clothing created: business, casual, and evening wear.

Group one, Uh Oh’ Clock, presents business wear with a twist. Rust and natural coloured linen tops and pants are printed with whimsical clock faces. The cuffs of stretch rust and tan cord jackets sport stylized watch faces on the cuff and are further detailed with an elegant paisley silk charmeuse. By far the most literal interpretation of TIME, Uh Oh’ Clock takes its detail inspiration from antique clock faces and the inside workings of watches.

The second group of the collection is based on a more abstract concept of time. Called Hello Stephen, it is inspired by Stephen Hawking’s work on Quantum Physics and scientific models of time. Featuring casual wear, it incorporates sweeping curves and piping details on high quality stretch cotton twill in putty, stone and khaki. Airy, white crushed silk, layered with voile and tulle, as well as slinky white Italian jersey, hand painted in fuchsia and veiled in white and navy netting, give Hello Stephen an intangible quality reminiscent of a scientist’s endless search for answers.

The final grouping, titled WHEN THEN?, is inspired by photographs from the Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs, taken from such an enormous distance, make any reference to time irrelevant. In this space we can disregard time and its perceived restrictions on our lives. This timeless spirit underlies Janet T. Planet’s collection of evening wear. Metallic netting stretched over iridescent chiffon in green, sand and frosted purple, coupled with stretch satin detailed with embroidered net, are the fabrics that could make TIME stand still. The Wedding dress, Janet T Planet’s signature standout piece, features a bodice of silk digitally printed with a photograph of the Milky Way. – A long white satin faced organza skirt flows out in a colourful trim.

“NOW” merges essential basics with Janet T. Planet’s signature innovative colour and fabric combinations.

In a world faced with turmoil and destruction, appreciating each moment has taken on a new sense of urgency. Janet T. Planet understands this urgency and wants to remind each of us to find peace and beauty wherever we can, and revel in it.

Inspired by the forest strata and titled “Undergrowth”, Janet T. Planet says of this line, “it is my take on coping with the fear that is being forced upon us at this time and getting back to nature for answers.” Janet’s autumn-winter 2003-2004 collection is a luxurious escape that grew in Janet T. Planet’s imagination from a single quote from Peter Gabriel’s Darkness: “I have my fears, but they do not have me, walking through the undergrowth.”

The first grouping “understory”, takes its cues from bark and gnarled wood grains. The day wear pieces are transitional from summer to autumn and from winter to spring. In keeping with the colors and textures of the forest, silk net in sage green is used, along with espresso wool gabardine. Light pink coarsely woven silk is embroidered with layered organza, while soft batik cotton is appliquéd with silk and wool.

“Forest floor” is very three dimensional, with details emerging from the seams. The pieces, designed as a transition between day and evening, are rich with texture and contrast. Metallic burnt yellow lambskin is used along with dark taupe angora knit and hand dyed tufted silk chiffon. Traditional fabrics are combined with innovative nettings.

“Canopy” inspired coats and eveningwear in generous, sweeping shapes. A closer look reveals fine added detail. A rich silk duchess satin is combined with cappuccino colored winter linen and midnight blue alpaca wool. The fabrics are heavily embroidered with netting and detailed with antique buttons. The finale of the show is of course the wedding dress, and Janet T. Planet’s bride wears organza embroidered with twine and Marino wool.

The three sections of the show mirror not only the three levels of the forest, but also the spectrum of fear we encounter in life. It can range from personal fear within, to micro fear encountered every day or macro fear imposed on us by the world itself. All in all, Janet T. Planet’s fall/winter 2003-2004 collection is a truly exquisite and thought provoking escape.

JTP’s collection for Spring Summer 2003, TONIC FROLIC, was inspired by the remedies of the old south – the idea that clothes could act as ‘tonics’ for our bodies. Making tonics out of clothes is right up Janet T. Planet’s alley given her penchant for sensual contrast, captivating colours, stunning fabrics and unique details. The collection features tonics for three body parts – the eyes, the brain and the heart.

The “Eye Tonic” line of day wear features apple green as a detail colour. Asymmetrical details and wild eye-lash inspired prints are combined with traditional silkscreen and embroidery to create looks that are designed for the bold at heart. The Orange dappled “Skin Tonic” line of avant-garde designs is dressy and wearable. Sheer fabrics combined with crispy taffeta give unexpected details like big collars and over-sized cuffs. The “Heart Tonic” is unconventional evening wear with splashes of dark reds, flowing fabrics, tone-on-tone prints, and hearts of course, are printed and embroidered for a playful and romantic touch. The whole collection is brought together by Janet T. Planet’s inspiring palette of cool shades: milky blue, white, and silver grey.

To experience Tonic Frolic is to have your weary senses awakened and recharged.

The Revelation a.w.2002.3 collection features a cool colour palette: teal and ice blue, dark moss green, deep wine. Vibrant green covered in frost, white, gold and cool cream. Gorgeous fabrics and textures: soft knits, rugged leather, silk, and brocade.

These are classically designed clothes with plenty of twists. There are casually tailored cut pants with a wide brocade cuff, a funky blue and brown leather mini skirt with peacock blue silk ruffling from a side slit, a sexy silk dress cut on the bias with a playful checkerboard pattern in cream and gold. A bodice gripping leather halter delicately hand embroidered. JTP created many of her own unique textiles for this collection – she boldly digitally printed designs based on industrial steel pipes onto silk creating an aquatic, romantic and flowing feeling.

The collection serves as a metaphor for the need to look more deeply beyond what we first see, to discover what is really there.
